Wi-Fi Comes to Runaway

Today, a Wi-fi connection was installed at Runaway for the enjoyment of guests who feel a need to be "connected."  You can also access Hulu, your Netflix or other video accounts from your computer and watch them on the TV in the family room.  There is also a basic PC for your use.  You no longer need to bring a calling card since this upgrade of "connectivity" brings with it the wonders of a MagicJack phone line with VOIP, so no long distance charges!

For those who look forward to the tranquility of Runaway...just turn it off.

New at Runaway

These beautiful photos of the Fall sunset from the deck were taken by Runaway guests in 2009.
We strive to continue to improve Runaway and your vacation experience. We have recently added a beautiful hand crafted fire pit with cut outs of seahorses, shells and more so that as the embers glow you can enjoy the unique beauty of this artisan creation. We’ve also added a propane steamer/fryer with two stainless pots and baskets so that you can steam or fry you fresh seafood and vegetables outdoors on the deck if you like (pictured above) to make your time outdoors even better.
There's a new stereo docking station for your iPod and  a new larger patio table on the deck. Our guests have commented very favorably on the quality and comfort of the beds at Runaway, so we've added a dual control Comfortair bed in the master bedroom.  We've also added a queen sized bed in the bunkroom in addition to the twin to provide more flexibility in sleeping arrangements.
Debbie has also been working away in the garden to add some new plants that should begin to bloom this year and has found some great Pangia organic bath products that will await you this year. Thanks to the feedback of our guests, we also added the ability to send invoices and accept payments electronically by credit card during the 2009 season.
As our previous guests know, we value your feedback, so if there are other amenities that you think would improve Runaway, please let us know. Thanks to feedback from one of our guests last year, we added additional flatware so that the dishwasher wouldn’t have to be run as often and added a coffee table in the family room so that it would be easier to play cards and board games there. Several guests commented about how much they liked the local book “Off Route 13” so we’ve also found several other local books that we know you’ll enjoy.
We are proud of the 5-star guest reviews that we have received on our Homeaway.com and VRBO.com listings for Runaway and are pleased to continue to be members of the Eastern SHore Chamber of Commerce.

Homeaway.com Advertises on Super Bowl

One of our favorite sources for advertising is bringing back the Griswolds in a Super Bowl commercial advertising Homeaway.com as the source for by-owner vacation rentals. We can't wait to see the spot.

Sportsman's Paradise - Check Out the Tournaments

In addition to all that Runaway has to offer, don't forget the incredible sport fishing in the Bay and on the Seaside. Bring your own boat or hire a charter. Visit dgif.virginia.gov/ and you will find hunting and fishing seasons for everything you should need. As far as events go, please stay tuned to the community calendar at the Eastern Shore o Virginia of Commerce (we are proud to be members). The Chamber's 4th annual Black Drum World Championship Fishing Tournament is May 14 and 15, 2010. You can register online on the Chamber's web site. Also, keep an eye on the web sites of Chamber members' outfitters Web sites – Chris’ Bait & Tackle, Eastern Shore Outfitters, and Don’s Tackle. Their contact info is in the online member directory as well. They tend to post info about local tournaments they sponsor or assist in organizing. The Northampton County Chamber held a speckled trout tournament last year. Hopefully, they will plan another for this year. Photos of the Marlin and Drum Fishing tournaments are featured above.

In the Fall and Winter months the outfitters can also provide information about hunting, including: wild turkeys, deer, duck and geese.

A Beautiful Summer Sunset

A beautiful sunset from our deck...looking across the cove to the Chesapeake...a new show of lights every night.

Boating on the Cove

This summer we got a jon boat with a 6hp motor. After earning his boating license Billy went for a spin out to the creek. What fun!

Fresh Crawfish for Dinner with Blueberry Pie for Dessert

Last year we made the trek for blueberries and the crawfish farm (right down the road) too late for the crawfish, but boy were the blueberries good! This year we made sure to go before the end of the season. For $12 we had enough fresh crawfish to feed the whole hungry crew.

Fresh Fare

We made a most enjoyable trip to the U-Pick orchard in Hacksneck after one of visitors reported picking 5 pounds of luscious blueberries and baking a pie. All of us enjoyed picking and quickly had enough for pies, turnovers and ice cream topping. The peaches were nearly ready and the apples will be really good in the Fall.

Its features include a very large kitchen with new appliances,2-zone central heat and air, 1.5 baths, family room, very large living room with fireplace, a bunk room that's great for the kids, a large deck and a private pier. Interesting art, cookware geared toward fun in the kitchen, and even a vintage rotary dial phone in the living room are part of the attention to detail that we have given in order to make your vacation at Runaway fun and out of the ordinary.

Nestled in the trees on a high bank

Runaway has a breathtaking view of the cove. The photo was taken from the other side of the cove. Runaway can be seen nestled in the pines. You can also see the pier and the long grassy shoreline along the quiet waters.

Family Room - a room with a view!

The family room is a great place for indoor family fun. It has a great view of the cove and easy access to the deck. The comfortable seating arrangement also affords room for overflow sleeping on the day bed. Vintage fishing citations, an antique rod and other wall art add interest and beach flavor to the room. Interesting books about watching wildlife, binoculars, cookbooks for local dishes, a jar of marbles, a vintage Scrabble game, and a rack of information about local attractions offer something of interest for everyone. There is also a large television and DVD player, although most of our guests spend so much time enjoying the outdoors that they say they never turn it on. In keeping with the vintage fun of Runaway you'll also find a vintage rotary dial phone just a few steps away in the living room.

Bunkroom

The bunkroom features a twin bed, full-size futon and nice seating areas. You'll also find most of the board games, crayons, and great immagination-stimulating toys like a wooden marble maze and MagNuts (a great circus with performers with magnets in their feet - they area a big favorite).

Fishing, Crabbing, Kayaking and Relaxing

The cove and Bay are also great places to fish, crab, kayak or just relax and enjoy the view.

A Lovely Wooded Setting

The yard at Runaway is heavily wooded and has great plantings. Guests are encouraged to pick flowers form the yard and enjoy them in a bouquet.

Master Bedroom

The master bedroom features
a beautiful view of the water, large
double closet, comfy queen-size
bed and double dresser.

Bedrooms with Character and Charm

Two more bedrooms (each with full-size beds) and a "bunk room" with a twin bed are all comfy and inviting with lovely quilts and great art.

Full Bath

Just like with the rest of the house, the full bath is tastefully and artistically decorated. The walls are hand painted using a sea sponge technique. There is a large vanity with plenty of drawers for good storage space. The tub with shower boasts a unique seascape cloth shower curtain.

If you fall in love with one of the pieces of unusual art work at Runaway, many are available for purchase, allowing for an ever-changing and interesting art experience when you visit.

A Large Wooded Yard with a View

The cove on the waterfront side of the property is breathtaking, while the heavily wooded yard provides nice shade on a summer day and lots of flowers for picking.

A Great View

Situated on a quiet cove just off the Chesapeake Bay, Runaway has a beautiful view. You can catch a glimpse of the Chesapeake Bay through the trees on the far side of the cove. Eagles, herons, ducks, Egrets and more call this serene area home. This photo was taken from the pier, looking West, on a beautiful blue-sky day.

Out and About

A nice walk under a canopy of trees, picking flowers from the many plantings in the heavily wooded yard, or a trip to the Exmore Diner are favorites...(along with kayaking, fishing, crabbing, reading a good book, and much more.
